Promising Practices for Increasing Diversity Among First Responders

December 2016 — The U.S. Department of Labor, Chief Evaluation Office announced its newly released report by Coffey Consulting, LLC completed in partnership with the American Institutes for Research. Through site visits to five first responder sites and a comprehensive literature review, the study identified promising practices that first responder agencies and organizations can leverage to increase the diversity of their workforces. The practices identified promote racial, ethnic, and gender diversity through recruitment, training, hiring, retention, and advancement strategies. This study was commissioned in response to public citizens and officials who have placed a renewed focus on improving agencies’ relations with their local communities by ensuring that first responders reflect the populations they serve.
